Sagamore Parkway bridge demolition

Sagamore Parkway Eastbound Bridge demolition July 12, 2016.

Today, July 12th, 2016, one of the road bridges, over the Wabash River, was demolished, using explosives. This is the latest phase in the reconstruction project, of the bridge carrying the east bound carriageway of Sagamore Parkway, formerly US52, from West Lafayette to Lafayette, Indiana.

River Road, Old State Road 43, which is situated next the Wabash River, and passes under the bridge, has been closed from Monday July 11, 2016, for approximately one month.

Traffic from the east bound bridge has been diverted onto the other, west bound bridge, temporarily. The deck had previously been stripped off of the bridge framework, and the most easterly span was removed, before the framework was demolished, at approximately 9AM, on the 12th. Crews have been given 24 hours to remove the debris from the river.

The east bound bridge is situated south of the west bound bridge, and was constructed in 1936, and is therefore older than the west bound bridge. The two bridges are of completely different designs.

Shawnee Bridge, between Warren and Fountain Counties, IN

The Shawnee Bridge, is a through truss bridge, crossing the Wabash River, between Warren and Fountain Counties in Indiana, was built in 1905, by the Attica Bridge Co. of Attica, Indiana. It was rehabilitated in 1980. It is a two lane wide bridge, still open to vehicular traffic, but with a 10 feet height restriction. It has a total length of a little over 800 feet, made up of five approximately 160 feet long trusses.

It is located south of the Warren County seat of Williamsport, Indiana, and the small unincorporated town of Portland Arch, which is itself north of the Fountain County seat of Covington, Indiana.

US 52 Sagamore Parkway Eastbound Wabash River Bridge

This interesting bridge is of Warren Deck Truss construction. It was built in 1936, has a total span of 982 feet, and carries the east bound carriageways of US52, from West Lafayette to Lafayette, across the Wabash River and State Road 43, at Lafayette, in Indiana. http://bridgehunter.com/in/tippecanoe/19010/

As I type this, at the end of May 2016, work is about to begin to remove and replace this old bridge. The structure and superstructure are deemed to be structurally deficient, and also the construction is similar the I35W bridge in Minnesota that collapsed suddenly in August 2007. http://bridgehunter.com/mn/hennepin/mississippi-35w/

The Railroad bridge over the Wabash, at Attica

Attica Heritage Days Festival

The first railroad bridge across the Wabash River at Attica was built when the Wabash and Western Railroad line was built through Attica, in 1858. According to an 1869 illustration of the layout of the town, the railroad crossed the river through a covered bridge. (Seen below in the lower center of the picture)

This was later replaced, with a Pratt Through Truss style, iron bridge, in 1880.

On the morning of April 6th, 1914, a freight train, crossing the bridge crashed, apparently weakening the bridge. When the east bound Wabash passenger train No. 4, known as the Continental Limited arrived, later that same day, they were held on the west side of the bridge. After Railroad Officials inspected the bridge, and after sending a switch engine across, it was deemed safe. The Continental Limited train crept out onto the bridge. 2014 Annual Covered Bridge Festival

The covered bridge festival, held annually, in Parke County, Indiana, starts this weekend, on October 10, 2014, and runs through October 19th. The events are centered around Rockville, the county seat, Mansfield and Bridgeton.

North Fork Coal Creek – Mellott, IN

This is is a bolted Warren through truss bridge, crossing the north fork of Coal Creek, north west of the town of Mellott, in Richland Township, Fountain County, Indiana.

It is located on Country Road North 500 East, north of Blacktop Road. According to Bridgehunter http://bridgehunter.com/in/fountain/2300075/ it was built about 1910, by the Attica Bridge Co, of nearby Attica, Indiana.

Its length is approximately 94 feet. It has a wooden deck, similar to the covered bridges that are fairly common in Indiana.

The condition of this interesting old bridge is poor, some of the cross braces are broken, and it needs some TLC.

The historic flooding of Sugar Creek, seen at the Lafayette Avenue road bridge, over Sugar Creek, in Crawfordsville, Indiana, April 19th, 2013. The road was closed to vehicular traffic, because the water level was almost up to the top of the arches, under the bridge. The Elston Softball park was closed, because it was under water, and the Creekside Lodge restaurant and lodge, was surrounded by water.

In an article in the local newspaper, the Journal Review, of Monday April 22nd, it quotes the National Weather service;

“According to the National Weather service, Sugar Creek crested Friday afternoon [April 19th] at 15.31 feet, making it the second worst flooding event since March 27, 1913, when the creek crested at 17.30 feet. Flood stage is considered at 8.0 feet.”

These pictures were taken on the Friday afternoon, around the time the creek crested.
